After a loooong hiatus..

Third year uni schedules have prevented Smeared Frost posts for a while.. so here's a quick post with the latest music news off the top of the ol' noggin'.

Well what more need to be said music-wise than Splendour in the Grass... purely amazing. www.splendourinthegrass.com for the ridiculous line up details of the Woodford-bound festival.

Other quick snippets in music news of late:

LCD Soundsystem announce Splendour will be their last Australian tour for the band and are planning on making the last shows something else. James Murphy, a god in his own right, (listen to 'All My Friends' and try not connect it with everything beautiful and sad you've ever experienced all within 7 minutes) is set to let loose as he says this will be the last time they will have the chance to do any of the wack shit they have ever wanted to do on stage.
Their latest album 'This is Happening!' has caused stirs as they take a step away from the instrumental side of 2007's 45:33 and back to the epic artform of repetition, 8 minute tracks and some amazing alternative dance music. Skip 'Drunk Girls' that shit is as disappointing as your parents found you when you asked them for money for Splendour tickets.

The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers has announced he will be releasing a solo album called The Flamingo. No mention of dates as yet.

Friendly Fires have made the greatest call of 2010 saying they will not be doing a MGMT on their next album, guitarist Edd Gibson stating 'I really hope we are not going to do what MGMT did. Whatever it is they have done, we want to steer well clear of it. I don't understand why they would make such a leap, go from great pop songs to just any old acoustic music played in anyone's bedroom."
Ahhhh feels good not sucking MGMTs arse. The scene kids cry - 'Its just more indie that's why you don't like it as much' eff off I love indie, 'Congratulations' (which was not all that bad an album just not anything more than that) was a blatant attempt at trying to be as queer as possible to steer clear of commercial fame. Successful boys, now have fun playing below par music to the kids who haven't realised how shit you are live yet. Pet hate: pretentious bands who make music to not be as commercial as their last album instead of just making music they love. (queue The Presets next release haha) END RANT.

Frightened Rabbits: Scottish, playing Splendour and this song 'The Twist', which is not their best musically (try 'Swim till You Can't See Land' for best judgment) has been in my head all afternoon. Lyrically amazing. Human heat - we all need some from time to time.

Kasabian are returning to Australia and playing Riverstage 25th July.

The Fratellis have called it quits due to the ol' musical differences thing.

And did I mention Splendour? Frost everywhere.

Bloc Party's Kele Solo Album

Kele Okereke, best known as the frontman for Bloc Party, is set to drop his first debut album in June. The album is meant to be more dance than what the Bloc fans are accustomed to but really, can this man do wrong? First single will be released one week before the official album release.

New FOALS!

MASSIVE news. Foals have released a video of 'Spanish Sahara', the first promo single from their forthcoming album due May 10.

The Foals steer away from the manic 'you-put-that-song-on-and-there-will-not-be-normal-dancing' vibe. Instead it's this slow yet insanely intense melody but still undeniably the Foals. The cinematography is pretty amazing too. Wait till you get mid-song.. queue intense build up and wa-lah.. you have goosebumps.

No Waves

Finally! The culturally deprived Sunshine Coast receives a morsel of art and live music goodness. Local lads have brought No Waves to a Kawana Waters warehouse for a night of art, photography, graphic design and delicious bands.

Artists Jayden Osbourne, Jake Springthorpe, Joy French and many more will be covering the wall with their masterpieces. Plus the Bats girls will be showcasing their live art.

If that wasn't tempting enough, the night is BYO which spells big house party in my eyes. With sweet decor and the likes of Rogerthat, Vacations (debut show) and Revolver & Son providing the soundtrack, its going to be one for the scrapbook.

Bring out your finest Fruity Lexia and head up the coast on Friday, 26th March.
24 Innovation Park Way, Kawana Waters.

Brisbane Soundwave 2010 Review

After purchasing a ticket after Jimmy Eat World were named, I was prepared for the all-moshing, rat-tail bearing idiots to be right up in everyones grill. What I got was mainly utter disappointment, all the kooks were part of my itinerary; cop sweat from the greasy guy jumping up behind me, covering me in his Carlton Mid during Placebo; the emo kids letting loose at Taking Back Sunday and the sweethearts to swoon with me at Jimmy Eat World. Instead I got folded arms and straight faces. If there were fans there they were seriously not showing it.

The beginning of the day was not showing much promise with Closure In Moscow given the flick after organisers claiming the lads to be rude, demanding and not worth the amount they were being paid. Ouch. These guys remind me heaps of The Mars Volta, give them a listen if ya dig.

The queue at the gates, which ended up rounding the streets, meant we missed The Gallows, terrible effort on our behalf.

We got there in time for Taking Back Sunday, one of the ultimate in punk bands back in 2003. A great proportion of the set were new tracks from their latest LP 'New Again' which personally I thought to be silly. I do like the album, its just I see Soundwave as bringing together all the bands you would never expect to see from the hay days, half expecting they would play more songs from 'Where You Want To Be' and 'Louder Now' to satisfy the kids who were too young to come see the guys all those years ago, but maybe that's just me.

Frontman Adam Lazzara seemed lack lustre in his performance. Halfway through the set he proclaimed 'I should have eaten a sandwich or something'. Whether that was the reason he was rubbish or not, who knows, but a friend who had seen them at Taste of Chaos said they were so amazing and looked like they loved what they were doing. This was definitely not the case today. She also added a sly 'And he got fat'. They ended the set with 'Makedamnsure' where Lazzara climbed the side of stage and hung upside down whilst singing. Fair play to him for trying to excite the motionless crowd but it just seemed like a big gimmick. Very disappointing set.

Eagles of Death Metal were next. I was excited, these guys were bound to move this crowd. Out they came with the delicious moustaches and big personalities. There were some killer sing-a-long moments and it was an overall energetic set. Borrowing the drummer from Queens of the Stone Age, they smashed through their set. As young wasted girls fell over and then preceding to continue laying on the ground, it appeared the kooks were coming out of the woodwork. This is what an all ages gig is all about, right? Highlights included 'Wannabe in LA' and '(Only Nineteen)'.

The time of day came to line-up for drink tickets and then line-up to actually get drinks. The glee to this is when the 30 year old, boisterous sheilas, which made queueing up that much more painful, were told they don't do EFTPOS and that they lined up for nothing. Karma at its finest.

We hit the grand stand for Alexisonfire. SO GOOD! Impossible to stay still watching these guys. 'Boiled Frogs', 'Young Cardinals' and watching the intense death pits from above were bullshit. The Canadian fellows know how to let loose, with frontman George Pettit somehow defying gravity when he jumps and the angelic voice of Dallas Green. Nice.

Paramore were an unexpected gem. Turned out to be the best act of the day for myself. 19 year old frontwoman Hayley Williams hammered out every soaring note to impossible perfection whilst jumping around in her leopard print pants. She's a fresh addition to the 'would turn gay for' list. All the big hits including 'Misery Business' stirred the crowd into an absolute frenzy.

Waiting at least half an hour for a hotdog to be told they were all out was pretty amazing. And in queue hearing all your favourite AFI songs was probs even better. Running back with dagwood dog in hand, sauce dripping down my arm, I still managed to see more than half the set. The AFI boys were looking as homosexual as ever, I mean this in the nicest way possible of coarse. Davey Havok is legendary live. Highlights included 'Miss Murder' with the whole crowd singing every word, 'Leaving Song' was a nice reminiscent memory from Sing the Sorrow way back in 2003. Thems the days.

The distinctive voice of frontman Brian Molko from Placebo rings through the RNA Showgrounds and you instantly know he's still got it. Playing favourites 'Meds', 'Every Me, Every You' they proved to be one of the most entertaining acts of the day.

Jimmy Eat World were the act I had been waiting for all day. Opening with 'Sweetness' frontman Jim Adkins' voice is the dream of every teenage girl. He tells the crowd how excited they are to be playing in Australia on such short notice and that it had been a while since the lads had gotten together and played. The setlist consisted mainly of all the slow, pretty songs which was kind of a mood killer, although slow dancing ensued; dips and twirls included. The set wasn't in any way mind-blowing. The boys didn't interact with each other or get the audience involved, they just... played. Ending the set with 'In the Middle' got the crowd going but even that seemed slower than normal. Expectations were probably set too high for a lot of fans, forgetting these guys have been out of action for a fair while.
Dying of thirst and feeling the effects of sun stroke, I stumbled out of the crowd in search of water, in turn missing the first three songs of Faith No More. I won't lie. I did a YouTube search on these guys before the day to see what the guys I only knew did an amazing cover of 'Easy', actually sang. What I found I really, really liked. 'Epic', 'Ashes to Ashes'.. the list of 'Bullshit they sing that!' songs just kept coming. Mike Patton has the energy of a 20 year old, he is amaaaazing. The suits, the ritzy walking stick the awesomely lame 'Bris-sexy' calls. Ah loved it. The headliners were impressive playing all the hits and amping the crowd with what was definitely hailed a killer comeback.

Sunburnt to a crisp and slightly disappointed in a lot of the day I wasn't surprised to hear some complaints on the way home about the atmosphere and performance of some of the bands being less than average. The buzz was missing and I pretty much felt like it was an 'ah well.. another band to add to the seen live list' which isn't what it should feel like. Live music shouldn't be like a cheap slut, another notch on the ol' belt kinda thing. I wouldn't say it was the worst festival I've ever been to, Sounds of Spring 08 takes that cake, but it was a close 2nd. Disappointing with a few diamonds amongst the filth, it would take an amazing act to get me there next year.

OK GO // Hungry Kids of Hungary review

Okay boys, we're headlining tours through Australia, just double-check we've packed everything.. feathered light-up guitars, lasers for the end of our feathered guitars, cameras for our microphones, confetti cannons, shirts that spell OK GO in lighting and a set of hand bells with the special gloves. Sweet, looks like we're good to go.

WTF is right, the whole night was a set of 'WHAT?! No way!'s. Rare is one word for these guys, in saying this, rare is what these guys do well.

The night started with local favourites Hungry Kids of Hungary which set the amazing atmosphere already within the Hi Fi Bar in West End. The crowd had come early to support the boys, the place was already packed. Anyone within the local music scene was no doubt familiar with their tunes like 'Scattered Diamonds' and 'Set It Right'. A shock cover of M.I.A's 'Paper Planes' was amaaaaazing, they know how to make something theirs and this is why they've done so well. It's obvious how comfortable they are on stage in front of their home crowd, absolutely killed it. And just a quick shout-out to the keyboardist, if you're up for marriage, I'm always here haha.

Between sets a swift visit to the Sling bar is always in order. That place is a gem.

I won't lie, my friend and I got a little carried away with our lychee cocktail and missed the first song of OK Go, which I'm still curious if it was 'Get Over It' or not seeing as it was missing from the set. The boys played a lot of songs from the new album 'Of the Blue Colour Of the Sky' which usually is a let-down for the crowd who are there to sing along and get all loose-like but the new album is pretty amazing. If you haven't had the pleasure, I highly recommend it, it has some surprising softer tracks which if you aren't already swooning over frontman Damian Kulash, you will be dropping on one knee. Seems I'm prepared to marry a fair few people from this night. But really, Kulash is one of those people far more attractive in real life who you just stop and have to say 'He is SO good-looking!!' Ah that little sexy smirk, you can just tell he loves what he does. Kulash is the glue to this band, the other members are pretty much blank throughout the set with the keyboardist showing no motion at all, even at the end of the night he robotically throws something out into the crowd without even the shadow of a smile.

Tracks like 'Skyscrapers' and the slow, pretty part of the night, 'Last Leaf' from the new LP were actually some of the highlights of the night. Kulash was pretty much solo on both of these tracks; 'Skyscrapers', which I now rate as one of my favourite OK Go songs, flaunt his vocal talent with a sexy screeching. Screeching is probably not the most favourable word to use but it was talented screeching none the less.. listen to the track and you'll know what I mean.

Old favourites 'A Good Idea At the Time' and that treadmill song 'Here It Goes Again' were always going to pump up the crowd. One of the strangest, coolest things I have ever seen at a gig came about when the table of hand bells was put to use. The boys all stood around the table with their special white gloves and, with what would have taken hours of practice, sang and played the bells in time and tune to 'What to Do'. Epic. Wow.

Then it was time to put the crowds vocal chords to use. Introducing the latest single 'This Too Shall Pass', Kulash did the ol' copy me and sing 'LET IT GO THIS TOO SHALL PASS' which made me like this song far more after seeing it live. Gold stars for audience interaction, and kudos for jumping into the crowd of 'lovers'. I clearly have nothing bad to say about OK Go's frontman, he was a general smart arse, told stories and he can fucking sing.

Definite highlight of the night was the encore. New single 'WTF?' saw the boys coming out into the darkness with feathers light-up guitars with laser beams that shot into the audience when they moved around, shirts that looked like tetris and then turned into OKGO with each member wearing one letter oh and did I mention the mass amount of confetti shot into the crowd at various points of the night. These guys obviously agree live music should be fun and exciting. One of the better gigs I've been to in a long time.

Can you just look at this jaw line haha..
