OK GO // Hungry Kids of Hungary review

Okay boys, we're headlining tours through Australia, just double-check we've packed everything.. feathered light-up guitars, lasers for the end of our feathered guitars, cameras for our microphones, confetti cannons, shirts that spell OK GO in lighting and a set of hand bells with the special gloves. Sweet, looks like we're good to go.

WTF is right, the whole night was a set of 'WHAT?! No way!'s. Rare is one word for these guys, in saying this, rare is what these guys do well.

The night started with local favourites Hungry Kids of Hungary which set the amazing atmosphere already within the Hi Fi Bar in West End. The crowd had come early to support the boys, the place was already packed. Anyone within the local music scene was no doubt familiar with their tunes like 'Scattered Diamonds' and 'Set It Right'. A shock cover of M.I.A's 'Paper Planes' was amaaaaazing, they know how to make something theirs and this is why they've done so well. It's obvious how comfortable they are on stage in front of their home crowd, absolutely killed it. And just a quick shout-out to the keyboardist, if you're up for marriage, I'm always here haha.

Between sets a swift visit to the Sling bar is always in order. That place is a gem.

I won't lie, my friend and I got a little carried away with our lychee cocktail and missed the first song of OK Go, which I'm still curious if it was 'Get Over It' or not seeing as it was missing from the set. The boys played a lot of songs from the new album 'Of the Blue Colour Of the Sky' which usually is a let-down for the crowd who are there to sing along and get all loose-like but the new album is pretty amazing. If you haven't had the pleasure, I highly recommend it, it has some surprising softer tracks which if you aren't already swooning over frontman Damian Kulash, you will be dropping on one knee. Seems I'm prepared to marry a fair few people from this night. But really, Kulash is one of those people far more attractive in real life who you just stop and have to say 'He is SO good-looking!!' Ah that little sexy smirk, you can just tell he loves what he does. Kulash is the glue to this band, the other members are pretty much blank throughout the set with the keyboardist showing no motion at all, even at the end of the night he robotically throws something out into the crowd without even the shadow of a smile.

Tracks like 'Skyscrapers' and the slow, pretty part of the night, 'Last Leaf' from the new LP were actually some of the highlights of the night. Kulash was pretty much solo on both of these tracks; 'Skyscrapers', which I now rate as one of my favourite OK Go songs, flaunt his vocal talent with a sexy screeching. Screeching is probably not the most favourable word to use but it was talented screeching none the less.. listen to the track and you'll know what I mean.

Old favourites 'A Good Idea At the Time' and that treadmill song 'Here It Goes Again' were always going to pump up the crowd. One of the strangest, coolest things I have ever seen at a gig came about when the table of hand bells was put to use. The boys all stood around the table with their special white gloves and, with what would have taken hours of practice, sang and played the bells in time and tune to 'What to Do'. Epic. Wow.

Then it was time to put the crowds vocal chords to use. Introducing the latest single 'This Too Shall Pass', Kulash did the ol' copy me and sing 'LET IT GO THIS TOO SHALL PASS' which made me like this song far more after seeing it live. Gold stars for audience interaction, and kudos for jumping into the crowd of 'lovers'. I clearly have nothing bad to say about OK Go's frontman, he was a general smart arse, told stories and he can fucking sing.

Definite highlight of the night was the encore. New single 'WTF?' saw the boys coming out into the darkness with feathers light-up guitars with laser beams that shot into the audience when they moved around, shirts that looked like tetris and then turned into OKGO with each member wearing one letter oh and did I mention the mass amount of confetti shot into the crowd at various points of the night. These guys obviously agree live music should be fun and exciting. One of the better gigs I've been to in a long time.

Can you just look at this jaw line haha..
